Depressive symptoms and tension in the trunk
In my work, I pay attention to how low mood can coincide with heaviness or tension in the chest and back. When someone feels unrefreshed in the morning or has little energy for daily life, their bodily experience matters.
This does not mean that tension in the trunk explains the cause of depression. Depression involves multiple factors and needs appropriate medical assessment and treatment. For medical information, see NIMH's guide to depression.
Why I pay attention to the trunk
The trunk includes the chest, abdomen and back. During a consultation, I consider muscle tension and discomfort when changing position.
For example, suppose your back feels so tight that you cannot find a comfortable position when lying down. Being told to think positively does not resolve that discomfort. Helping you find a less uncomfortable way to rest can be a useful part of support.
This is different from claiming that releasing tension cures depression. What I can feel during a treatment does not establish the cause of a medical condition. I follow changes in discomfort, sleep and daily life over time, rather than drawing that conclusion from muscle tension.
Considering the person's life as well
I understand feelings and thoughts as arising through the body, which is continually shaped by its surroundings. For that reason, physical treatment also involves listening to what is happening in a person's life. Work, relationships and opportunities to rest all matter.
It can be difficult to change how you feel while the same demands continue. Even if your body feels more comfortable after treatment, ongoing strain may remain. We therefore consider what treatment can address and where support in daily life is also needed.
I do not explain depressive symptoms in terms of a particular personality or a lack of effort. There may be reasons why it is hard to rest or ask for help. I listen to those circumstances and consider what is possible without adding to the burden.
Consulting alongside medical care
If low mood or loss of interest persists and affects daily life, consult a healthcare professional. If you are already receiving care, please tell me about your treatment and medicines.
I do not offer acupuncture as a complete treatment for depression or advise stopping prescribed medicines. We can discuss support for bodily discomfort while taking your medical care into account.
You do not need to explain everything at once. We can begin with where you feel discomfort and what makes it difficult to rest.
